Graham Roy Coleman B.Sc(Hons), M.S.B., C.Biol., M.I.W.Sc.

After graduating from the University College of North Wales, Bangor with a B.Sc. Honours degree in Zoology & Applied Zoology, and a further 3 years research at the same University, Graham Coleman became a Senior Scientific Officer at the Princes Risborough Laboratory, Building Research Establishment (BRE), Dept. of the Environment, Biodeterioration Section, where he undertook both field and laboratory studies into the control of wood boring insects and the action of surface applied preservatives. This work lead to a number of research papers published in authoritative International Research Journals and internal BRE papers/reports.


rtabbkGraham is a Chartered Biologist (C.Biol), Member of the Society of Biology (MSB), a Member of the Institute of Wood Science (M.I.W.Sc). He also has qualification in Chemistry and Botany.

Since 1982 he has been in private practice (Remedial Technical Services) as an Independent Consultant specialising in Laboratory and Consultancy services examining dampness and timber infestation/rot problems in buildings; overall he has over 35 years experience of practical scientific site investigations examining dampness and timber infestation problems, especially in recording and analysing materials and data for laboratory and other analyses.

Graham Coleman acts as an expert witness in both Civil and Criminal cases, clients including Trading Standards, Advertising Standards Authority, Housing Associations, Solicitors, and Local Authorities.

During his career he has investigated many buildings and other structures including HMS Victory, The Great Hall at Westminster, King Arthur's Round Table in the Great Hall at Winchester. This latter investigation resulted in the recorded author to a chapter in Professor Martin Biddle of Oxford University publication, King Arthur's Round Table; an archaeological investigation' (pub. Boydell) Graham Coleman has also had a number papers published in technical journals and other publications concerning investigation of dampness, and measurement of moisture in building materials. He is the author of one of the definitive guides to dampness, 'Guide to the Identification of Dampness in Buildings' and was an invited member for the Government supported CIRIA 'Review of Methods for Testing Moisture in Building Elements' He is the author of 'The concise Guide to the Identification of Insect Attack and Fungal Decay of Timber' (e-book)

dbookHe was invited by English Heritage to present a paper on the Control of Death-watch beetle as part of the 'International Woodcare Conference' in 1998. He further presented a paper in November 1999 at the English and Scottish Heritage Seminar on the Control of Dry Rot.

He has also appeared on consumer television programmes both on the BBC and ITV as an expert in dampness.

He gives specialist presentations to the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), Association of Building Engineers (ABE), Local Authorities, and Housing Associations on timber infestation and dampness related subjects.

Graham Coleman has given presentations on dampness in buildings and timber infestation in Norway, Eire, Hungary and Denmark and also undertaken investigations into dampness at the Yellow Warehouse, Copenhagen. Graham Coleman is an Independent Consultant member of the Property Care Association (formerly the British Wood Preserving and Dampcoursing Association), and is frequently invited as a speaker at their specialist dampness and timber seminars. He also undertakes the training for the CSRT (Certified Surveyor in Remedial Treatments) qualification in timber infestation and dampness, and also provides a specialist course for Building Professionals on Condensation and Mould growths; this latter course is also presented at Portsmouth University.

Graham Coleman is both a trainer and examiner for the nationally recognised qualification Certified Surveyor in Remedial Treatments (CSRT) and Chief Examiner for the Certificated Surveyor in Structural Water-proofing (CSSW) qualification.
