After graduating from the University College of North Wales, Bangor with an Honours degree in Zoology & Applied Zoology, and a further 3 years research at the same University, Graham Coleman became a Senior Scientific Officer at the Princes Risborough Laboratory, Building Research Establishment, Dept. of the Environment where he undertook both field and laboratory studies into the control of wood-boring insects and the action of surface applied preservatives. This work lead to a number of research papers published in authoritative International Research Journals and internal BRE papers/reports. Since 1982 he has been in private practice (Remedial Technical Services) as an Independent Consultant specialising in laboratory and consultancy services examining dampness and timber infestation/rot problems in buildings. During his career he has investigated many buildings and other structures including HMS Victory, The Great Hall at Westminster, and King Arthur's Round Table in the Great Hall at Winchester; this latter investigation resulted in a recorded author to a chapter in Professor Martin Biddle of Oxford University publication 'King Arthur's Round Table; an Archaeological Investigation' (pub. The Boydell Press) In addition to his research papers Graham Coleman has had a number of papers published in technical journals and other publications concerning investigation of dampness, and measurement of moisture in building materials. He is also the author of one of the definitive guides to dampness, 'Guide to the Identification of Dampness in Buildings' and also the author of 'The concise Guide to the Identification of Insect Attack and Fungal Decay of Timber' (e-book). Graham Coleman is an Independent Consultant member of the Property Care Association (formerly the British Wood Preserving and Dampcoursing Association), and is frequently invited as a speaker at their specialist dampness and timber seminars. He also undertakes training for the CSRT (Certificated Surveyor in Remedial Treatments) qualification for the Property Care Association in Timber Infestation and Dampness, and also provides specialists courses in these subjects for building professionals, and a specialist course on Condensation and Mould Growth in Buildings designed for Housing Associations, Environmental Health Officers and Local Authorities. He was also invited by English Heritage to present a paper as part of the 'International Woodcare Conference' in 1998 and also presented a paper at the English and Scottish Heritage Seminar on the Control of Dry Rot in November 1999. He was also an invited author for the government supported CIRIA 'Review of Methods for Testing Moisture in Building Elements'. He has gives specialist presentations to the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), Association of Building Engineers, Local Authorities, and Housing Associations on timber infestation and dampness related subjects. He has presented educational seminars at Imperial College, Southbank University and in Norway, Eire, Hungary and Denmark, and has also appeared on BBC and ITV consumer programmes as an expert in dampness. He is a Chartered Biologist (C.Biol), Member of the Institute of Biology (M.I.Biol), an Associate of the Institute of Wood Science (A.I.W.Sc), and an honorary Fellow of the Institute of Specialist Surveyors and Engineers F.Inst.S.S.E). He also has qualifications in Chemistry and Botany.
